What is Chartered Physiotherapy?

Chartered Physiotherapy can be defined as the health care profession concerned with human function and movement and maximising potential.

Chartered Physiotherapists have spent a minimum of three to four years in full time third level education completing their undergraduate degree. Once they have successfully completed their course they are awarded the title “Chartered Physiotherapist” and are entitled to use the letters MISCP once they become members of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.

At Physio4U Sports Injury and Spinal Clinic all our Chartered Physiotherapists are registered members of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. As part of our continuing development each Chartered Physiotherapist has to complete a minimum of 30 hours continual professional development annually. This ensures that the most up to date techniques and evidence based practice is applied in the clinical setting and passed onto each and every client. Manual therapy (i.e. soft tissue massage, joint mobilisations, stretches etc) is a strong component of our clinical practice along with individualised exercise programmes, biomechanical assessments and education to prevent injury reoccurrence.

Aren’t all “Physio’s” the same?

No is the answer to this question. Many therapists are currently working in the republic of Ireland in a variety of settings both sports and leisure using the term “physiotherapists”/ “physio”/”physical therapist” but have not completed the required courses recognised by the only governing body here the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. Currently the Irish government are introducing legislation through both the Dail and Senate which will help clarify this situation for the public.
While this legislative change is occurrning YOU can ensure that you are in safe hands by asking any “physio” the following question:

“Are you Chartered?”

If you are currently attending a “physio” and want to check they are members of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists log onto the following sites www.iscp.ie or www.cppp.ie and click the “find a physio” icon.

Remember if your physiotherapist is chartered you are in safe hands

The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists represents all Chartered Physiotherapists working in the Republic of Ireland in both the public and private sector.
Internationally the terms Chartered Physiotherapist/Physical Therapist are synonomous. To safeguard the interests of chartered physiotherapy in Ireland and to promote our profile internationally the ISCP are full and active members of the following organisations:
WCPT: World Congress of Physical Therapists www.wcpt.org
IFOMT: International Federation of Orthopaedic and Manipulative Therapists
